S.R. 44 over Intracoastal Waterway, New Smyrna Beach, Florida:  E.C. Driver designed a new 1,303 foot long bridge featuring prestressed concrete girder approach spans and a single leaf bascule main span.  The main span over the navigation channel consists of a 115 foot long single leaf trunnion bascule, measured trunnion to tip.

Distinguishing elements of the bridge are waterline bascule piers built without cofferdams, a hydraulic cylinder drive system and spherical roller trunnion bearings. The waterline bascule pier footing was developed to eliminate the expense and permitting issues associated with typical cofferdam construction in an environmentally sensitive waterway.

Aesthetic features of the bridge include strong horizontal rustications in the bascule and approach piers used to break down the scale of the massive concrete structures.
