SR44, Astor Bridge Rehabilitation, Deland, Florida: E.C. Driver provided engineering services including an in-depth inspection, rehabilitation study and preparation of plans for the major rehabilitation of the single-leaf Hopkins trunnion bascule span. The primary focus of the project was the Hopkins trunnions due to continuing failure of the hub mounting bolts.

ECDA performed a detailed investigation of the trunnion assemblies including a check of the alignment and a finite element analysis to develop the appropriate corrective action.

Through this investigation, it was determined that the trunnion hub did not have the required fit into the girder web and was moving as the bridge opened and closed. ECDA developed an innovative solution to secure the trunnion hub to the web of the main girder utilizing high strength dowel pins and a clamping ring system. This eliminated the need to replace the trunnion assemblies.
