Bee Ridge Road Deck Replacement, Sarasota, Florida: This project represented District One’s first design/build approach to deck replacement projects. E.C. Driver provided engineering services for Zep Construction, Inc. as part of the design/build team contracted to replace the existing, deteriorated bridge decks on I-75 over Bee Ridge Road. The existing deck was a composite system of pre-cast concrete stay-in-place panels and a cast-in-place concrete wearing surface, built in 1981. A combination of factors, such as poor construction materials and techniques, delamination of the wearing surface from the pre-cast panels and heavy traffic impacts caused significant cracking and spalling of the deck. Due to this extensive deterioration, FDOT District One decided to replace the entire deck with a full-depth, cast-in-place concrete deck. The FDOT wanted to maintain two lanes of traffic across the bridge during construction; so two phases of construction were utilized to perform the deck replacement. The new deck incorporated all of the FDOT construction standards existing at the time, including F-shaped traffic barriers and an 8” thick deck.
