Ortega River Bridge Rehabilitation, Jacksonville, Florida: E.C. Driver designed and prepared plans for the structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical rehabilitation of a historic Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge carrying SR 211 over the Ortega River. The entire rehabilitation project was performed under an accelerated schedule. After an in-depth inspection, it was determined that it was more economical to replace the entire steel bascule span rather than attempt to perform costly structural steel repairs. ECDA designed the replacement superstructure, machinery and controls in only three months. To facilitate rapid replacement of the bascule span superstructure and reduce detour time, ECDA developed the design so that the entire steel superstructure could be pre-fabricated off site. Due to the historic nature of the structure, the replacement design was required to maintain the appearance of the original 1927 vintage design. All work was reviewed and approved by the State Historic Preservation Officer.
