Suncoast Parkway, Section Six,
Hernando County, Florida:
This project for Florida’s Turnpike involved the design of 10.35
miles of new, limited-access toll highway from S.R. 50 to U.S. 98 in
Brooksville, Florida. The project presented complicated highway
geometric design with spiral curves, superelevation, a toll plaza,
an at-grade interchange and several grade separations. In addition,
the project included the design of seven new bridges, two of which
are designated wildlife crossings.
The drainage design included the engineering analysis of the
following: cross drains, side drains, storm sewers, roadside
ditches, outfall systems, and retention/detention facilities. Each
of the 36 storm water management facilities required detailed permit
applications, which were reviewed and approved by the Southwest
Florida Water Management District. One of the challenging aspects of
the drainage design was to provide compensation for encroachment on
the 100-year floodplain.
A unique aspect of this project was the design of a paved
recreational trail paralleling the Suncoast Parkway for the entire
project length. The design of the trail included special bridge
extensions, at-grade intersections, and a trailhead at U.S. 98.
