SR-688 (Ulmerton Road) Pinellas County, Florida: This project involves an east-west urban principal arterial located in the cities of Clearwater and Largo, Florida. The limits of this project are from El Centro/Ranchero to just west of US–19 and include one major intersection at SR-693 (66th Street). SR-688 is currently a 4-lane divided highway with intermittent right turn lanes, open drainage ditches, a raised median and no sidewalks. This section of SR-688 is designated as a bicycle route by Pinellas County and PSTA operates a bus route in both directions. Development along this section is primarily commercial and residential. This project includes reconstruction of SR-688 to improve the level of service. The proposed typical section submitted includes 6 through lanes west of SR-693 and 6 through lanes with 2 auxiliary right turn lanes east of SR-693. The third lane throughout the project will be 12 feet to help accommodate the 14% truck traffic. The proposed typical section includes a 4-foot bicycle lane and 6-foot sidewalk in each direction and a raised median that varies in width from 19.5 to 31.5 feet. Dual left turn lanes are proposed for all approaches to the SR-693 intersection and for the eastbound approach of the US-19 intersection. This project also includes adding one northbound through lane on SR-693, from SR-688 to 142nd Avenue North. SR-693 is currently a 4-lane divided rural typical section with a depressed median and open ditches. The additional lane will connect to an existing right turn lane at 142nd Avenue North. Northbound SR-693, from SR-688 to 142nd Avenue North, will also be resurfaced to improve tie-in of the new lane and cleanup of MOT striping. The approaches on SR-693 will include sidewalks and bicycle lanes within the reconstruction limits.
